In Sebastian Matthews’ debut collection of poems, as if a horn blew them on the page, a voice of experience emerges to blend objective details of daily life with the lyricism of a jazz musician into poems that—consistently and thoughtfully—illuminate. Here is a voice you have never heard before and what a refreshingly unforgettable song it is. Listen with “heads bent in reverie” to what his poems offer up in their swell of desire, music, personal history and revelation. Place his poems in your hands, and you’ll “want to place/ a coin on his lips in homage/ to all the music that will blossom there.”
