<image:title>Blog - At the Waffle House - Three line cooks. Three waitresses. Two managers—man facing the customers, woman calling out orders, smothered, covered, over easy, steak & eggs. Left-side cook sets up plates, keeps waffles coming. Right-side cook grills the meat, replaces the egg basket over the center cook’s head as he turns out omelets, hash browns and eggs. The waitresses float back and forth, setting down full plates, picking up empties, refilling coffees, bringing more toast for all last night’s prom goers, some still in their gowns and tuxes, this morning’s soccer players in their dirty uniforms next to rumpled dads, and all the extra personnel in town for Military Week, line out the door. And all I can think, when the manager listens to one of her waitresses complain about some wrong and answers, “Communication is key”—meaning I hear ya and I got your back, but now’s not the time for any more of that, and the waitress walks off, still fuming but nodding her head—is we need more of this, whatever this is I am witnessing here in Goldsboro, NC, nine-thirty in the morning, the early morning rain outside already beginning to sizzle a little on the asphalt and all the lights turning green.</image:title>

<image:title>Graphic Novel - Paperback Version</image:title>
<image:caption>A Paperback Collage Novel It’s the early 90s: before the advent of the internet, before cell phones magically appear in everyone’s hands. The Gulf War has begun. To Linus Grey and his circle of bohemian friends, this just might be the last, great gasp of “beat” culture. But what to do? Where to go? When Sara heads out for San Francisco, Linus picks up from the seacoast town of Portsmouth, NH, and sets out after her. The original version The Life & Times of American Crow appeared a few years back as a limited-edition, book-arts collage novel—11 chapbooks coming together to create a boxed-set edition. Learn more below. A full 260 pages, rife with color images, this new paperback version of the collage novel American Crow boils down the essence of the original eleven-chapbook box-set edition into an easy-to-read, dynamic format that combines the traditional novel with aspects of the graphic novel. <image:caption>Working on a memoir or a collection of personal essays? Trying to structure a book of poems? I've worked with writers like you for over twenty years--one-on-one and as a workshop leader--helping them create, draft, and revise their creative works. Let's sit down over Zoom and see if I can assist you with your project--whether it be just a bunch of notes, a rough first draft, or a complete manuscript ready for revision.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Each week I host a radio show called, Jazz Hybrid on 103.7 WPVM. It’s a community-based show celebrating good music and engaging conversation by highlighting some of the many amazing writers, teachers, artists, activists, and musicians living in the area and the projects they are working on. I play modern and contemporary jazz music—working to widen and deepen the notion of “jazz” —while engaging with local and national figures.</image:caption>

<image:title>Books - In My Father's Footsteps - In My Father’s Footsteps</image:title>
<image:caption>A Memoir A brilliant father, a complicated legacy, and a son's hard-won journey of self-discovery. William Matthews was a much-admired, award-winning poet and teacher who lived hard and died suddenly in 1997 at the age of fifty-five. He was a jazz fan, a wit and raconteur, a connoisseur of fine food and wine, and a thrice-married womanizer. This clear-eyed, often wryly funny memoir pays homage to a charismatic father as the son struggles to step out from his considerable shadow. In examining his father's death (and life), Sebastian Matthews explores his own chaotic past. A child of divorce, he was shuttled throughout his boyhood between parents and many geographies. In a confusing symbiotic time between Bill's marriages, the teenage son and his father "were roommates and drinking buddies―I took care of him; he parented me." Later came the son's wanderings, the failed commitments. Finally, Sebastian learns to confront Bill's mixed legacy. Striving to emulate the best of that "sad, happy man," he discovers new definitions of home, love, and marriage. 256 Pages | Available in Hardback or Paperback | Published January 2004</image:caption>

<image:caption>Poetry Miracle Day explores the main themes of midlife; sex and death, marriage and parenthood, work and play, friends and foes, travel, and staying put. Moving back and forth between couplets and the single-stanza poem, Matthews writes about the world he is immersed in, whether listening in on an impromptu barbershop quartet with his son or driving through urban Philadelphia on a misguided whim. Matthews continues his interest in jazz and musicians but has broadened his palate to include ruminations on everything from the 1948 summer session at Black Mountain College to Jack Benny’s legendary corn-belt comedy routines. 104 Pages | Available in Paperback | Published March 2012</image:caption>

Along the way, I interviewed Charter on his work, his approach to photography, and on his life as a traveler, street photographer, and filmmaker. The photographer Larry Fink says this about the book: "A travelogue of sensitivity and loneliness. Unlike a symphony, this book has no real build to a crescendo, nor does it drain to a morbid end. It could go on and on. In it, there is a softly purring love affair with dignity and the small elements of pride which make up all of our lives."</image:caption>

<image:caption>Poems In Beginner's Guide to a Head-On Collision, Sebastian Matthews offers a glimpse into his painful yet transcendental journey of healing a broken body, mending a shattered soul, and the utter zeal of making a layup when you thought that would never again be possible. With honesty and wit, this poetic memoir demonstrates how, chipped piece after chipped piece, Matthews and his family put together their fractured lives after nearly losing them in a head-on collision. 88 Pages | Paperback | Published September 2017</image:caption>

<image:title>Books - Beyond Repair - Beyond Repair: Living in a Fractured State</image:title>
<image:caption>Published 2020 In 2011, my family was in a major car accident. We were hit head-on by a man in the throes of a heart attack. It took three years to recover from our injuries, and a couple more to deal with the aftereffects of trauma. When I finally returned to the world—as father and husband, friend and brother, writer and citizen—it became clear that our society was in its own traumatized state—reeling from the string of police shootings of unarmed African Americans, stunned by yet one more mass shooting. The people around me were displaying all the signs of PTSD—jumpiness, irritability, numbness—and, concordantly, my interactions out in daily life were becoming more dysfunctional, at times downright hostile. Us against them. Red vs. blue. Black vs. white. Rich vs. poor. That we were living in a progressive town inside a conservative county in the Mountain South only made things more volatile. I decided that if we were all living in a fractured society no longer recognizable, then it was up to me to re-engage in it. I would enter into encounters with people as conscious as possible of the potential divides and misunderstandings between us. I started with my neighborhood and town, then moved out into the counties around us, then traveled further out into the country. My goal: to connect.</image:caption>
